Promoting cancer awareness, supporting early diagnosis, and empowering our community through health education.

September 2026 was a meaningful and impactful month at Central Mosque of Brent, as we came together to promote colon cancer awareness and highlight the importance of cancer screening, early detection, and access to reliable health information.

Through a series of informative health awareness sessions, we aimed to empower members of our community with the knowledge and confidence to take proactive steps towards protecting their health. The sessions provided opportunities to learn from healthcare professionals, understand NHS services, ask questions, and gain a better understanding of the importance of recognising symptoms and seeking timely medical advice.

Our programme brought together medical expertise, practical guidance, and community engagement, reinforcing our commitment to making health education accessible to everyone.

Understanding the Importance of Colon Cancer Screening

We were delighted to welcome Dr Nazia Ali, who delivered an informative session on the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

Her presentation helped attendees understand the purpose of bowel cancer screening, why participating in screening when invited is important, and how early detection can contribute to better health outcomes. The session also encouraged community members to become more informed about the screening process and to seek clarification from healthcare professionals whenever they have concerns.

Bowel cancer can affect people from different backgrounds, and raising awareness is an important step towards encouraging people to engage with appropriate screening services. By providing accessible information in a welcoming community setting, we hope to reduce uncertainty, challenge misconceptions, and encourage informed decisions about personal health.

Improving Digital Access to NHS Services

Accessing healthcare information and services online has become increasingly important. As part of our awareness programme, we welcomed Shireen Wright, who guided attendees through the NHS App and explained how it can be used to access a range of useful NHS services.

The session introduced participants to the practical benefits of the app, helping them understand how digital healthcare tools can make it easier to access health information and manage aspects of their healthcare.

By improving digital awareness, we aim to help members of our community feel more confident when using NHS services and navigating the healthcare system. This is particularly important for individuals who may be unfamiliar with digital healthcare platforms or who would benefit from additional support in accessing online information.

Our aim is to ensure that people have the knowledge and confidence to make better use of the healthcare resources available to them.

A GP's Perspective on Colon Cancer Awareness

We were also pleased to welcome Dr Amjad Riaz, who shared valuable insights into colon cancer from both a general practice and patient perspective.

His session highlighted the importance of being aware of potential symptoms, understanding when to seek medical advice, and recognising the role of early diagnosis in the management of bowel cancer.

The discussion encouraged attendees to take changes in their health seriously and to speak to their GP if they experience symptoms that concern them. It also reinforced the importance of not allowing embarrassment, uncertainty, or fear to prevent someone from seeking professional advice.

Health awareness is not only about sharing information; it is also about creating an environment in which people feel comfortable asking questions and discussing sensitive health concerns. Through these conversations, we hope to encourage a more open and informed approach to cancer prevention, screening, and early diagnosis.

Anyone experiencing concerning or persistent symptoms should seek medical advice rather than waiting for a screening invitation.

The Importance of Community-Based Health Education

At Central Mosque of Brent, we recognise that trusted community spaces can play an important role in promoting health awareness and encouraging people to access appropriate healthcare services.

By hosting health education sessions within our community, we aim to make important health information more accessible, approachable, and relevant to the people we serve.

Our September programme demonstrated the value of bringing healthcare professionals and community members together. Attendees actively participated, asked questions, and showed a genuine interest in learning more about cancer awareness, screening, and NHS services.

These conversations are essential in helping people make informed decisions about their health and supporting a culture in which prevention, early detection, and timely medical advice are encouraged.

We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to access reliable health information and feel supported in taking responsibility for their wellbeing.

Working Together to Raise Cancer Awareness

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr Nazia Ali, Shireen Wright, and Dr Amjad Riaz for sharing their knowledge, time, and expertise with our community.

We are equally grateful to our volunteers, organisers, and everyone who attended and supported the sessions. Their involvement helped make the programme a success and demonstrated the strength of community participation in promoting health and wellbeing.

We also extend our thanks to Macmillan Cancer Support for supporting our cancer awareness and health education work. Their contribution helps strengthen our efforts to provide valuable information and encourage meaningful conversations about cancer within the community.

Looking Ahead: Continuing Our Commitment to Health and Wellbeing

The conclusion of our September Colon Cancer Awareness Month activities marks another important step in our ongoing commitment to community health education.

We look forward to continuing this work through future awareness sessions covering different types of cancer, important health topics, and opportunities to learn more about available healthcare services.

Our aim is to build a community where people feel informed, supported, and empowered to seek help when they need it. By working together with healthcare professionals, community partners, volunteers, and local residents, we hope to make a lasting contribution to improving health awareness and encouraging early engagement with healthcare services.

At Central Mosque of Brent, we believe that knowledge is a powerful tool in protecting health and saving lives.

Knowledge saves lives. Early detection matters. Together, we can build a healthier, more informed community.

With thanks to Macmillan Cancer Support and everyone who contributed to our September 2026 Colon Cancer Awareness programme.
